How did you get started in the bridal makeup industry?
I have been doing bridal makeup since 1997. I worked at several Eastside salons before opening my own Studio in August of 2010.

What made you want to be a makeup artist?
I was always fascinated by makeup even as a little girl. Makeup is magical you can take something ordinary and transform it into extraordinary!

What is the favorite part of your job?
I love that everyday is different. Each client has different needs. I might be working with a bride or getting a client ready for a special event, or doing a photoshoot on location.  My job is an adventure!

What is the most important piece of advice you can give a bride looking for the perfect bridal makeup?
Be realistic with your expectations, consider the time of day and where you will be photographed indoor / outdoors lighting affects everything!  Book your makeup 6 months in advance this gives you time to schedule your trial session, and any additional beauty sessions you may need to achieve the look you want hair cut / color, spray tan , etc....

What sets you apart from other artists?
I have done over 1000 weddings, I do a thorough consultation to get a visual of the look my bride would like created.   I am calm and confident this reassures the bride that she is in good hands.  I am comfortable doing makeup on all ages and skin tones.

Do you have a signature look you like to do for brides?
My signature look is "classic elegance ". This look creates beautiful timeless photos that will always be in style.

Favorite memory of a wedding or bride?
I had the opportunity last year to do the makeup for one of my long time clients.  Jane started coming to me for brow waxes back in high school. She went off to collage and met the love of her life while studying Photography. They married last September, it was so wonderful to be part of her special day.

Choosing your Wedding Cake: Seasonal wedding cake advice

There are so many choices when it comes to choosing your wedding cake style.

First, you have to think about how you would like your cake to reflect your personalities.  Are you a classic couple? Modern? Romantic? Avant Garde?

Then, you have to think about how would you like your cake to tie back to the wedding theme?  Are you having a beach wedding? Winery? Backyard private residence?

Next you have to think about how those answers are best achieved through the use of fondant versus butter cream versus a naked cake versus ganache and so on.

After that is flavor profile (our personal favorite part!).  Are you a Vanilla, Chocolate, Salted Caramel, Peanut Butter Cream, Toasted Coconut Pecan or Pink Champagne couple?

Additionally, you want to think about the time of year that you're getting married at.  Not only can this help direct what you want the cake decorated like, such as Royal Icing snowflakes for a winter wedding, to hand-painted flowers for a Spring wedding; but help you decide just want type of wedding cake decor you should have.  Molded chocolate details, are lovely but in the hot, humid days of summer, can quickly lead to a melted mess. Kara Burfeind, owner of The Sweetside, says "Flowers on cakes are a classic and always look great, but in summer, consider using seasonal berries and a textured buttercream. The duo looks fresh, beautiful and SO tasty!".

Most importantly, remember, that a good wedding cake company will help you with all these decisions and make the experience as stress-free, fun and tasty as possible.

The Sweetside was featured at The Loft at Woodinville Whiskey Company/Hollywood Tavern during the 2015 Weddings in Woodinville tour and crafts award-winning cakes and dessert including cheesecake, French Macarons, cake pops, and ice cream sandwiches,  The SweetSide creates the fabulous confection you're craving.  Stop by their shop to peruse our rotating selection of ready-to-go sweets, or give us a call to place a special order for your event of ANY size!

Tutorial: How to Fold Napkins into Elegant Bow Ties from BBJ Linen

Bow Tie napkin fold tutorialIf you’re researching different ways to make your event look like no detail went unchecked, folding napkins into fun and elegant shapes is one way to do so. Our vendor partners at BBJ Linen, are always looking for ways to help all of their customers plan the events of their dreams, and that’s why we’re ecstatic that they have shared their tutorial for folding napkins into beautiful bow ties.

Folding napkins into bow ties is easier than you might think, and adds a unique, classy touch to your event.

Tutorial: How to Fold Napkins into Elegant Bow Ties

Step 1: Start with the napkin facing up, laying flat, with the pattern or texture you want showing.

Step 2: Flip the napkin over, so that you are looking at the reverse of the fabric.

Step 3: Fold the napkin in half to form a triangle (not a rectangle).

Step 4: Fold the top corner (both layers) over so it covers the top third of the napkin.

Step 5: Now, fold the bottom of the triangle up twice, but with smaller folds than the top—this time, each fold should only cover 1/4 of the napkin. Fold twice so that the bottom covers the tip of the folded-down top.

Step 6: Fold the top down to cover the bottom, so you get one long line of folded-napkin.

Step 7: Fold the entire right side of the napkin upwards, forming a 45-degree angle.

Step 8: Now, fold the entire left side in the same manner, creating a crisscross or X on the top where they intersect.

Step 9: Pinch the center of the napkin together at the same time you pull the X down toward the center. This should create the overall shape of the bow tie, as shown in the next step.

Step 10: Almost time for the big reveal! Slide the napkin ring onto one side of the napkin and position it in the middle, so it holds down the center pieces/tails.

Step 11: Now, gently pull the napkin corners downward to form the bow shape you are looking for. You can hold the center in place while you do this for additional stability.

Step 12: Because this side looks a little bit messy, here’s the trick up your sleeve—flip the whole thing over, and you’re done!
